Very nice used 1953 EPIPHONE DEVON archtop jazz guitar, with older non original hardshell case. Guitar plays and sounds great, fully functional but has a couple of issues. Top of guitar has been refinished, and the top had an area near the treble side F-hole patched in where a volume and tone pot were installed at some point. The top refin is an amatuer job, but is usable as is. There is some pulling/loosening of the binding in the waist areas of the top only- due to shrinkage from age- very common on archtops of this era. End pin is missing. A strap button has been added to the neck heel. The pickguard bracket shown in the pictures is not correct- I have a correct one on it's way to me- I will install it on the guitar. Guitar is an easy retsoration candidate, but makes a GREAT players grade archtop as-is. the hardshell case is in good solid condition, has one latch that is broken. Otherwise very nice- no filth or bad smells. Fits guitar perfectly.

Now, the GOOD things about the guitar!!! It plays and sounds GREAT! Big, LOUD, warm full sound. Did I mention it's LOUD? Great feeling neck profile. Neck set and angle are good- action can be set wherever you want it. Original nickel Frequensator tailpiece is in great condition- NOT cracked or bent. Original nickel tuners work smoothly. Original small frets are very usable, not worn out.

Materials: Handcarved solid spruce top; solid mahogany neck with walnut centerstripe; maple back and sides; Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with distictive oval fingerboard inlays, art-deco peghead inlay, and inlaid Epiphone logo, all in solid mother-of-pearl, bound body and fingerboard.

Hardware: Original nickel-plated open-back tuners.  Original compensated solid rosewood bridge, "tortoise-shell" style pickguard and Frequensator tailpiece. Hex-key adjustable truss rod at peghead.

Notes:  A true carved top guitar, the Devon is the rarest of all full-size Epiphone acoustics, made in small numbers in the New York factory only between about 1949 and 1953. The guitar has the 17 3/8" solid hand-carved top and the long 25 1/2" scale of the Deluxe, Broadway and Triumph models, with which it is structurally identical. Like these more commonly-seen models, the Devon also has a solid Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and the patented Frequensator tailpiece.

This is a GREAT old guitar, worthy of adding to any collection. A very affordable way to get into an OLD WOOD, HAND CARVED TOP, USA made archtop guitar... Think about it... what kind of guitar could you get for this price down at the local Guitar Center?
